Choosing your Birds

We understand that there are many people looking to keep poultry for the first time. Choosing the right birds, for you, can be a daunting task. There are many factors to consider when choosing which breed of bird to buy. Here are a few things to consider.

  • How much outdoor area is available to the birds.Bigger birds will need more room to roam around.
  • Larger birds need a larger house  to perch and nest in.
  • The temperament of a bird is very important especially when children are involved in their care  .
  • The colour and number of eggs produced may be important to you.
  • Something as simple as which colour to choose can be difficult.
  • Some birds can be quite high maintenance such as those with feathery legs or those with unusual plumage. These birds need to be kept in exceptionally clean and dry conditions.
If it all seems a bit confusing and you need to know about any aspect of poultry keeping, please pick up the phone or email us.We will be more than happy to discuss your needs or to answer any questions you may have.

Ordering and Collecting your Birds

Once you have decided which birds you would like all you need to do, once you have checked their availability, is to get in touch and arrange to come and collect them.

Delivery can be arranged if you prefer.

If you are collecting then please remember to bring something to transport the birds home in. They are very good travellers and will be quite happy sitting in a cardboard box or pet/poultry carrier

When you get your birds home

Moving to a new home can be very stressful for young birds. The main thing you must remember is to keep things as quite and calm for the birds as possible.Stress can make birds quite ill and sometimes can kill them. Pet dogs and very young children should be kept away from them until they are happy and settled in their new home.

This is our tried and tested method of moving young birds and it works really well.

Day One - you need to introduce them to their new coop/house.If possible food and drink should be put into the coop with them and the pop-hole should stay shut for 24 hrs or at least overnight. This gives them time to settle down and get used to their new surroundings.
Day Two -  the pop-hole can be opened to give them the opportunity to go outside. Don't worry if they don't go out on the first day - they'll come out when they are ready.
Day Three -  put the food and drink outside. This way any birds that haven't ventured out will have to come out to eat and drink.

If you have any worries or need advice please get in touch. We want your experience of poultry keeping to be as enjoyable and as stress free as the lives of the birds you are looking after !!
